ABOUT
Nordic walking
What is Nordic Walking?
Nordic Walking uses specially designed poles to turn an ordinary walk into a whole-body workout. With a technique similar to the upper body action of classic cross-country skiing, it’s a versatile activity suitable for all fitness levels – from gentle walks for health and wellbeing to more athletic Nordic running. Over 10 million people worldwide enjoy this outdoor activity all year round.
How does it benefit your body?
Nordic Walking combines the simplicity of walking with effective core and upper body conditioning. This low-impact, full-body exercise helps you to:
- Burn up to 46% more calories than walking without poles
- Release tension in the neck and shoulders
- Improve posture and walking technique
- Strengthen your back and abdominal muscles
- Reduce strain on the joints
And because it feels smooth and natural, you’ll often find yourself walking further – and for longer – without it feeling like hard work.
ABOUT
Learn to Nordic Walk
Charlotte’s Wood is home to Suffolk and Norfolk Nordic Walking, run by Charlotte Atkinson and Carol Castagnetti. Both are qualified British Nordic Walking Instructors and members of the International Nordic Walking Federation (INWA). They teach using the INWA 10-step method – a clear, easy-to-follow progression that helps you quickly master the technique.
Charlotte and Carol offer regular Nordic Walking Taster Sessions for anyone curious about the activity, as well as follow-on tuition for those keen to develop their skills. Sessions can be arranged on a 1:1 basis or for small groups, either at Charlotte’s Wood or other local locations.

ABOUT
NORDIC HEALTH WALKS
Charlotte and Carol organise monthly Nordic Health Walks for those who have learned the Nordic Walking technique – although walkers without poles are always welcome too. These friendly, sociable walks attract a mix of ages and fitness levels, creating an inclusive and welcoming atmosphere.
Walks take place at a variety of locations and are usually between 3–5 miles, with shorter routes available for anyone who would prefer a gentler option. Each year, the group selects two charities to support and all Nordic Health Walks help raise funds for these causes.

ABOUT
NORDIC FITNESS SESSIONS
Each week, Charlotte or Carol lead a Nordic Fitness Session in and around Charlotte’s Wood, Wilby, designed to boost fitness and wellbeing through regular Nordic Walking workouts.
Sessions may include:
- A brisk 3–4 mile Nordic Fitness Walk around Wilby, with the option to complete laps on the woodland path for those preferring a shorter route or slower pace.
- A Nordic Fit workout using poles and resistance bands to improve balance, coordination, strength and overall conditioning
Participants should be familiar with the Nordic Walking technique to join the Nordic Fitness Walks, but anyone can take part in a Nordic Fit session – and poles can be borrowed if you don’t have your own.
